The yearly classic between Southern Miss and Tulane, is nationally recognized as the
"Battle for the Bell."

The long-standing rivalry was born on the evening of October 13, 1979.
With 44 seconds left in the game, and Tulane ahead 20 to 19, the Eagles tried a trick kick return, only to have it called back on a controversial clipping call.   Following an advance of 46 yards on a pass play, the clock was running out and USM was forced to take a hurried field goal attempt.  Over 30,000 fans stood amazed as the field goal (that appeared to be successful) was signaled "no good" by the referee as the officials sprinted for their cars.
